Mrs Maggie Clifford - Memorial Service held in College Chapel

Posted: 7th November 2015

Many of you will know of and remember the 3 generations of the Clifford family that have been pupils, Common Room staff and on the Governing Body spanning over half a century from 1951 to 2009. The family have always been great supporters of St Lawrence College.

It is therefore with great regret that we have to share the news that Mrs Maggie Clifford sadly passed away on the morning of Friday 30th October 2015, aged 70.

Maggie and husband John (OL 1968) were the first ‘House Parents’ of Bellerby House, living in Sutton House at that time. John was Common Room staff from 1973 to 2001. Their son Jamie (OL 1994) is currently Chief Exec. Officer of Kent County Cricket Club, and Sarah kept with family tradition and became a teacher.

Past Common Room Member Mr John Harper kindly forwarded the following news:-
I wonder if you might inform every one of the sudden death of Maggie Clifford? Many will remember her husband John as a modern language teacher, housemaster, examinations officer, governor and a generally good chap, and, of course, Maggie was always of the greatest support to him.

In her own right she ran Fledglings Nursery School for many years and was a local JP. Having breathing problems on the Thursday evening, Maggie was taken to QEQM where she was kept in overnight. When John left late evening she was in good spirits, but took an unexpected turn for the worse in the early hours, passing away at 4am.

All are welcome to attend the Memorial Service which will be held at St Lawrence College Chapel at 2pm, Friday 20th November. Refreshments will be served after in the Dining Hall. A very large congregation is expected and we would advise arriving in good time to park and take your places.
