Lodge House Master 1949 – 1969
13 September 1920 – 8 February 2014

Born in Lincoln on 13 September 1920, Donald was educated at Dulwich Prep then Culford. During the war, Donald registered as a Conscientious Objector and due to ill health, Donald was sent to teach in a prep school in Uttoxeter, something he enjoyed and found profoundly satisfying. This led directly to his decision, after the war, to apply to Cambridge University (Emmanual College) where he studied History and English, obtaining a First and later a PhD.
Whilst at Cambridge Donald became a member of the Alpine Society of Great Britain and climbed extensively in the Alps, particularly the Matterhorn which he initially climbed with just a single guide. He also played hockey for his College 2nd XI. Donald was very active in the Christian community and became President of the Cambridge Intercollegiate Christian Union, After graduating, Donald was appointed Head of the English Department and House Master of Lodge House at St Lawrence College, where he was to remain for 20 years. Donald was much loved and respected by his pupils, many of whom kept in contact throughout his life.

In 1969, following a recommendation from one of his ex-pupils, Donald was invited to

join the staff of L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. Donald became a highly valued member of the teaching team. Donald also carried out several lecture tours in America and was twice a Visiting Professor at Geneva College in Pennsylvania. He has also lectured widely in the UK and Australia. In 1973 Donald returned to the UK to teach at Skinners School, Tonbridge, before retiring in1987, when he moved to Whitehill.
In his retirement Donald was very active in the local church, serving for a time as an elder. He also continued to teach and lecture at Christian Unions at UK universities and overseas.

Besides the strong Christian faith which was at the core of Donald’s life, he always

had a particular love for children, young people, animals and the environment. He loved music, especially church organ music, art, theatre, literature,Gothic Cathedral architecture and travel. But most of all, he enjoyed meeting and encouraging people – keeping in touch with old friends and meeting new ones. Those who knew him appreciate his kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness and impish sense of humour.

The following was one Donald’s favourite quotations, an excellent expression of his faith

(with a slight adaption of Psalm 31 v. 15):

‘My times are in His hands’

Words taken from a 25 page celebration of Donald’s life, produced by Donald’s brother Colin Drew.

Donald’s funeral was held on Friday 21st Feb at St Mary’s Church, Liss, Hampshire.
